Traveling by Car with Your Pet

Summer road trips are better with your furry friends! However, traveling with a pet usually involves more than putting the animal in a car and driving off. Proper planning ensures a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone.

First and foremost, take care to buckle up your pets when in the car. Restraints protect your pet during sudden stops and prevent them from distracting the driver. Cats and smaller dogs are often most comfortable in pet carriers, while harnesses work well for larger dogs. No matter what kind of restraint you use, be sure that it does not permit your pet’s head to extend outside the car window to prevent eye or ear injuries from debris.

If your pet is not accustomed to the car, take it for a few short rides before the trip to help them adjust.

Follow these tips for a smooth trip:

  • Pack Smart: Remember to throw in a few of your pet’s favorite toys, food and water bowls, a leash, and food.
  • Stick to Routines: Stick to your regular feeding routine while traveling. Take along a jug of water from home to avoid stomach upset.
  • ID is Vital: Make sure your pet is wearing an I.D. tag and consider a microchip.
  • Carry Papers: It’s important to carry health and rabies vaccine certificates in case of emergencies or border crossings.
